In the event that your Surface Duo fails to boot properly, you could always send it in to a Microsoft Store to get the device fixed or replaced. Or, if you’re comfortable getting a little technical, you could attempt to recover the device yourself.
To do that, you’ll need to download the Surface Duo Recovery Image.
What you’ll need:
- Your Surface Duo
- A paperclip, or the SIM eject tool
- Preferably, fast internet

Step 1: Find your Surface Duo serial number, you’ll need this to get a download link of the recovery image from Microsoft. The serial number is located on the SIM card tray, so you’ll need to eject the tray to note it down.
Step 2: Head over to the Surface Recovery Image website, then select “Surface Duo” from the drop down menu.
Step 3: Enter the serial number when prompted.
Step 4: Download the recovery image.

You can follow our guide on how to use the Recovery Image if you’re not familiar with the process.
Good luck!
