Before you can flash a recovery image on your Surface Duo, you need to put it in recovery mode first. This is fairly straight forward process that will require you to press a combination of buttons in the right order.
NOTE: To be on the safe side, make sure Surface Duo is charged to at least 50% or more before attempting any recovery procedures.
NOTE: Unplug the USB-C cable from Surface Duo if you have it connected to a PC.

Step 1: Power off Surface Duo.
Step 2: Once powered off, press and hold the Volume Down button, then press and release and Power button while continuing to to hold Volume Down.
Step 3: Once you see a menu on the left screen, release the Volume Down botton.
Step 4: Use the Volume Down button to switch between the multiple menus. Switch to the red “Recovery Mode” menu, and press the Power button to confirm.
